I’ve had the great honor and privilege of meeting some of the world’s finest subject matter experts. Professor Kardian ranks among the finest of the finest.
He is also a newly signed author, with publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster.
Professor Kardian shares our first meeting on a blistery cold Thanksgiving weekend in NYC where we’d become fast friends. I am humbled by such sentiments from a highly accomplished lifelong martial artist, Law Enforcement DT Trainer, security expert television consultant, and author of a what is arguably the best treatise on personal self-protection and self-defense, “The New Super Power for Women”. I highly recommend this book and we have purchased them for our school, friends and family.

I met Sensei Thong Nguyen via Facebook about 12 years ago and we quickly became friends, and had frequent phone conversations. We eventually met in NYC, at Grand Central Station, Thanksgiving weekend 2013. Thong drove me to a park in what I would refer to as a challenging neighborhood in Harlem. Thong demonstrated some small joint manipulation subject control techniques on me and I immediately knew that he possessed special skills. With more then 36 years in law enforcement and 46 years in the martial arts I had never experienced this level of efficiency.
As Thong continued to demonstrate and teach me, a crowd began to gather from a nearby housing project. I was working for the NYC Dept. of Investigation at the time and as this group of “gentlemen” continued to grow I said, in somewhat half joking voice, “no worries, I do have an extra magazine with me.” Thong replied that he didn’t believe that would be necessary (I now know this to be true). Some in the crowd asked Thong to teach them the techniques he was demonstrating and he politely declined. We decided to cut the session short and enjoyed a coffee, sightseeing in Manhattan, and some great conversation. This was also the first time I met his lovely wife to be, Vanessa.
When Thong visited NY again in 2016 he offered to give me a private lesson and I jumped at the opportunity. We met at a local martial arts academy just outside NYC. We did a private session for more then 2 hour and Vanessa captured the session on video. I have never been exposed to this type of energy. He combined the elements of leverage, technique and timing with precise economy of motion. His fluidity and grace were a thing of beauty and I embraced his patience and attention to detail.
To say I was beyond impressed is an understatement. He is a man of great integrity, morals and compassion. I have always compared the martial arts to chess, there is a move for everything, a counter for every move, and a counter for every counter! In chess the title of Grandmaster is the highest title a player can attain and Thong is every bit deserving of that title in every aspect of his life. I am proud to call him a dear friend!
The more I learn the more I realize how much I still have to learn!
